Happiness: Food for the Soul

I am forever at awe with children. No matter what the situation is, they manage to smile, giggle, laugh and find joy in everything. They are content fiddling with a wooden toy, watching a favorite cartoon show, eating cookies with milk or looking for more spiders! You see them eating delightedly at Jollibee, playing joyously with friends and beaming at the sight of their parents coming home from work.

Happiness is a personal choice. It cannot be obtained from any tangible, fleshly object or relationships one has. It is frequently acquired from the simple things that touches and warms the heart.

Og Mandino's definition of happiness sums it up. "Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself."

I am not hard to please. Someone saying hi to me is enough to make me smile. My family especially my nephews and niece are my sources of bliss. Similarly sunflower, coffee and window shopping gives me an instant lift. These are some of the things that make me happy. What about you?

  1. Is that from the Gift of Acabar or another of Og Mandino's many books? It's true, happiness is our choice. I marvel at how kids do it so easily and naturally, so much unlike adults. Thinking about it, we should not lose the inner kid in ourselves.

  2. Oh yes, you are absolutely right. You can find genuine happiness in children. I can attest because i can always see it in my son. He is always happy and contented with little things. He will scream with happiness upon hearing his Daddy's car parking in front of our house. Happiness lies within us.

  7. for me happiness is simply appreciating the blessings, the life, the love, and the people around us.. the things we can't buy are the key to true happiness. :)

  8. I'm so easy to please too, in short "mababaw ang kaligayahan"! I am happy with simple stuff, like an hour chat in the net with my folks back home or a home-cooked meal by my husband. :)

  9. It is a tried and tested stress-reliever - when you are feeling bad, look at children at work while they laugh or simply smile. It lifts your spirit up.

  10. I couldn't agree more with your statement that happiness is a choice...With that, I am reminded of the movie "Life Is Beautiful"...Anyway, I guess, we can still have a childlike view of happiness if we choose to do so :)

  11. Oh so true! Happiness is a choice! I was once asked if I was contented with what I have... when i said YES I was, he seemed so surprised! We can never be happy if we are not contended, but wanting to do more and trying to reach higher heights is also a choice!

  12. Need some dose of happiness. Somehow, I've never been truly happy since I lost a child four years ago. I guess I must still be grieving until now. My two children do make me laugh and smile and generally in high spirits everyday. :)
