Rediscovering My Love For Cross Stitch

Setting foot in Maning’s last Friday afternoon after more than a decade of not visiting my once favorite store brought back memories of yesteryear's and positive feelings from creating nothing into a spectacular work of art.

I consider this place a gem; a haven for the hobbyists like me who need not tread the populated place of Divisoria and hop from one stall to the other. Buttons, threads, yarns, patterns, beads, acrylic paints and many more things you might need for your current project are surprisingly found here.

I was joyfully elated at the sight of these. I scanned my eyes for the new things they offered and sheepishly grinned to myself when I saw the sales lady eying me and must have found me nostalgic at that very moment.

Cross-stitching was introduced when I was in grade school. From then on, my love for this grew into a hobby. I have collated three boxful of numerous DMC threads, I have framed several aida cloths mostly with cottage and floral patterns and I have many more finished projects that need to be preserved and framed.

This activity can be very addicting. I could saw on and on and obliviously forget the passing of time. This is also a good means of relaxing and momentarily forgetting reality as I immerse myself to the pattern and the goal of seeing the finished product. As I see more cross stitches on the aida cloth filling up every space, the more euphoria I feel.

The visit to Maning’s has tapped my creative side. Now I am thinking of the next pattern I will purchase as I rediscovered my love for cross stitch!

  2. I've always found cross-stitching to be very beautiful. My mother-in-law does cross-stitching all the time and it's something I hope to learn to do from her one day.

  3. WOW!!!!
such beautiful works of art. I love them all, especially the kitties :) I use to cross stitch a lot and then fell out of it as well. Just at Michael's the other day I passed some and thought 'gosh, haven't done that in awhile'...do what you love!

  6. Thank you for stopping by my blog. Squirrels are very common around here; however, they are not pets. I live in a woods, and they are always stealing the food from my bird feeders.

I believe I would enjoy going to the shop you mentioned in your post. I enjoy sewing and embroidry and smocking. In the last couple of years since I have been retired I have been doing some quilting also.

I saw your blog about flying, and it looked like so much fun. My youngest son was a pilot, and I really enjoyed when he would take me up in a small plane. A couple of years ago my oldest daughter and her husband took me and my husband on a cruise; and at that time, my daughter and I parasailed. That was really cool too. It is so quiet and peaceful to "fly like a bird."

Thanks again for stopping by, and I look forward to seeing what is going on in your part of the world. God bless!...Janice

  7. Ooh my goodness Farida - your cross stitch works are so beautiful. How proud you must feel to have worked and created all of them. I do love the underwater scene and the English Cottage and gardens are so soft on the eye. I truly admire your work and ability.
Our Daughter does beautiful cross stitch work too and I have always been in awe of her patience and skill.
Thank you for sharing your love of cross stitch with us :D)

  8. Dear Farida...it was a joy to have you visit my blog and I look forward to getting to know you through yours. I so much admire your cross stitch pictures. They are all so beautiful and I love the ones of the cottages. I have been doing cross stitch for several years, usually when we are taking a rest in our Italian home. The light is good there (as it is for photography), so easier on my eyesight. I love browsing in craft shops and the store that is dedicated to sewing looks like a 'gem'.
I pray your week is blessed x Linda@Relindis Blog.

  15. Hi! My husband is good at cross stitching and most of our framed masterpieces at home are his. I am more of handmade ribbons and flowers, and also eyeing crocheting. I hope I can do it all at the same time because we are planning to make modern booties and sell them online through my shop.

  21. Your cross stitch works are just gorgeous!! I am so glad I popped over here today...I had forgotten about cross stitching as a younger girl. I loved to do projects and perhaps now I will take it up again. Thank you for sharing all of your lovely works.

  22. following you now! =) I love cross stitching too! But haven't done it lately. Namiss ko bigla...

  23. I used to do that as a school requirement. Kinda good with it but now, I seem to have lost that dexterity, or was it the patience hehehe.

    ReplyDelete
  24. This looks like it would take a lot of patience, but I can see how one could get deeply engrossed into it...and it could become addicting. You have created a lot of amazing works of art. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I am now following you. :)

    God Bless,
    Heidi

  25. I miss cross stitching too. The last work I did was a decade ago. A micheal angelo. I made a lot ballerinas and cartoon characters too. Your post made me think about reliving my hobby too. I still have my box of yarns and my collection of patterns. I should go through them tonight when I get home, I feel like going down memory lane too hehehehe :)

  27. wow, I'm blown away by your talent, this is a wonderful art that take great patience. your work is beautiful. today I stopped in a yarn store and made a purchase for a knitting project - it was a bit like your experience perhaps. I'm hoping to get some summer knitting done - it keeps my hands busy when they aren't digging in the dirt! thanks for stopping by my blog and saying hello, I truly appreciate that. you have a lovely blog. happy day to you.

  28. I did a few school cross stitch projects. Didn't continue the habit, coz my eye hurt because of it.

Do a really really big one! That's so fullfilling to finish.

  29. How nice! I never did get hooked in cross stitching. Perhaps I'd rather do the drawing in a canvas with an acrylic paint or oil paint. Anyway it's very nice to have something to do with, especially on a boring and dull day.

  30. You've made a lot of lovely pieces already! It's amazing how one trip to an old store can remind you of your passion for this craft. I hope to see more of you work. :)

  31. I used to do this a lot when I was in highschool and I hated it! More because I suck at it :3 It looks easy but I always manage to make mine look messy. My teacher said I pull the string too much and the holes become visible XD

Wow! look at that cottage house! It would go well with my bedroom. Hmn maybe I should try it again with this kind of pattern. Looks advance though :/

  32. Wow! You are one cross stitch-er! Your works are beautiful! I told my Mom to try doing it, but she says she just doesn't have the knack for it.. :)

  33. My nanay was into cross stitching when she was pregnant with our youngest sibling. I think she made about 4 or 5 and had them framed. After a year, I used it as a final piece of my project in school. LOL

  34. Seems like I'm the only male commenter in this post so far. :) But anyway, I remember the time when cross stitching became a hit in the Philippines. It was like, 6 out of ten Filipinos are into it. I have an aunt and uncle who painstakingly stitched with a design of a couple on their wedding dresses, and gave it to my brother as a wedding gift.

    :)!

  35. I love cross-stitching too! In fact, I have a couple or more finished project which are yet to be framed :D

  38. I never got any of my work framed! I gotta find them and see if they're still in good shape. I also still have an unfinished project in one of my boxes. Maning's is very accessible, and we were frequent customers there too :)

  39. Beautiful creation! Don't stop doing this for as long as it makes you happy :) I have special respect for people who know how to express themselves through the things they like doing

  40. Nice work and this is a great hobby as well to kill some time. Id still remember my elementary projects with this and I also sucked about this project. It is really hard and takes a lot of patience, but after looking at the finished product all of the stress and the blood (literally) you will say unto yourself that it is really worth it

  41. Good luck with your rekindled interest in art. :)

  42. I very well remember back in HS where we need to stitch a project and we'll leave it behind the THE room.

  43. I get euphoric too when I'm so engrossed with my work..Now I'm more into accessory making. I just love it when I finally finish it and see the end result. I love all your patterns. It looks so cozy and warm. Makes me wish I'm in that place - specially the cottage designs. :-)

  47. This reminded me of the fabric shop where I used to buy school project materials back in grade school. I never had the tiniest bit of patience for cross-stitching so your patience and apparent skill for it are commendable. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Really beautiful crafts!! I don't have my talent for cross stitch and certainly don't have the patience for it. Love your creations.

  49. I was once addicted to cross-stiching too. But unlike you, I never got to finish big projects. I only did bookmarks for friends and little keepsakes and whatnots. :)

It's always nice to go back to old things that we enjoy doing. Happy stitching! :)
