Are You Like This?

My exposure to the call center industry in the past for more than four years has allowed me to meet a hodgepodge of people from all walks of life. In retrospect, I admit that I miss mingling with the clowns of the team who seemingly make working fun and enjoyable despite the demands to meet the performance scorecard and the fast-paced life associated with it.

As an IP relay operator then, assisting the deaf and the hard of hearing communicate with an able bodied was exceedingly fulfilling and rewarding. I depend on the wheelchair for mobility and I felt a surge of pride to have helped my fellow persons with disability.

The compensation was very satisfying but I heard a few whine due to lack of money after a week or less of receiving their wages. On the other hand, you would see them with the latest gadgets available in the market or have traveled to the famous tourist spots here and abroad. The loan sharks seemed to be their only refuge to cope with living before the next payday comes. They obviously forgot to hold onto their hard earned money to pay for the necessities first.

Please don't get me wrong. I am not generalizing the people emanating from such industry but I am merely sharing my experiences. This may also happen to anyone you may know. Consequently, may the poster below be a reminder to all of us to live within a budget or better yet, to live below our budgets so we can put aside something for tomorrow.

  3. Being retired, and on fixed income...my dearest and I have lived on a budget for some time.. It's actually freedom to know what you have and how much you can spend. Then when a little extra comes in...how nice to do something special like a nice dinner out.

  4. I agree. One danger that comes with working for these outsourcing companies is that each time they give you a raise, you're also pressured to "upgrade" your lifestyle. It's a trap. Tsk2.

  11. This condition is far too common across all industries. We need to learn about personal finance.

  14. I used to work as a customer service rep answering calls back in 2004-2006. And I know exactly what you mean, Ms. Farida. Not that I was like them, but because I have observed the same to some of them. Sometimes I wonder, why would they always whine that they don't have money anymore when all I see are latest gadgets around them, they eat out all the time in expensive restos, etc etc. Right, I am also not generalizing everyone, but there are really some who are. I hope those "some" would learn how to value their hard earned money because for one, working in such an industry is no joke. Mataas ang stress level! But yeah, come to think of it, sometimes, I miss working with the clowns of the team, too. They make work a little less hard. :-)

  16. I agree. Parang one day millionaire, after one week lang waley na pera. That's why we try to live within our earnings. Oftentimes, we are on kuripot mode. Ilan ulit pang paguusap bago kami bumili. I keep track on our expenses too, as in daily. Hehe.. In that way, I know where our money goes. Both of us agreed to be transparent :)

  19. I have a daughter who needs that poster!
Thank you for the job you do. My niece is deaf. For years we had a TTY, or whatever that typing telephone was. But if we were on the road, like going to her house, and needed to contact her, the special operator was essential, and they all were professional, concerned, helpful.

  20. Hi Farida! I admit I used to be one of those people. But I have awakened and now living within my means. I realized I have wasted enough resources on things that are not really important. This new year marks my return towards the road to financial recovery and independence.

  22. I can't agree more Ida. That's very true. If we would like to be financially stable, we should be conscious on our spending habits, otherwise we would spend years and years at work without having anything on hand comes retirement period.

  23. Sometimes people do crazy things just because they have a little more money. What's wise is to live simply whether you have plenty or little.
