You Are Unique and Beautiful

When I was much younger, my connotation of "beautiful" was to have a thin and skinny body. These were frequently the images I saw in the magazines and the television. And like you, I too tried various means to lose the unwanted pounds. I exercised excessively and ate too little, replaced my meals with shakes and I even bought the coffee that will help suppress the appetite. Migosh! I stopped the latter after consuming only one sachet. I was awake the whole night and my throat was dry. The effects of those harmful chemicals were dangerous, I thought.

Moving forward and many years after, I learned to embrace my uniqueness and found the equation: exercise + a healthful lifestyle + moderation = ideal. And as I matured in years and exposed myself to various personalities and circumstances; the meaning of the word altogether changed. A person's character and good qualities were more important.

The video is a far cry from the idiom, "beauty is only skin deep."  How do you define beautiful?

  2. Dear Farida,

Oh my... the beauty I think just try to be yourself.Love yourself and act as your self.

I thought anorexia is physiological problem.
unfortunately the mass media has been creating this problem to teenager. Because they want to copy the image they like to be.

have a good weekend to you

  6. A thoughtful, provoking post, and timely for me! I actually didn't care about being skinny as I was growing up; now that I'm older and a Mom, I find I do need to maintain a clear, balanced view of my body and what's considered beautiful. There is way too much unhealthy, unrealistic emphasis placed on body shape and other physical features, leading to a dangerous level of self-loathing, when what is of far greater importance is one's inner beauty -- one's kindness, compassion, gentleness, good humour, and so forth. One of my favourite Bible verses says that "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight". I believe this holds true for anyone, Christian or not. 8. We don't have to be skinny to be beautiful. It's how you bring yourself but still losing weight helps to be physically beautiful. :)

  9. So scarily thin! Sometimes, the influence of media can give a person a distorted self-image.

  10. So scary. I did not even have to watch the video. just the "thumbnail" of the video is scary for me. Well, I believe that the most important "beauty" is inner beauty. Coz, what sense does it make if your beautiful on the outside, but ugly on the inside, right? So, for me, as long as you are good on the inside, it does not matter what size you are or how you look. :) Nice post!

  13. Naku, ako kahit na madalas naiinis ako sa katabaan ko, i have a pretty good self-image. kaya importante na pinahahalagahan ang pagkatao at kakayahan, para di masyadong focused sa looks lamang.

  14. Oh gosh... anorexia, the wife of Ellen was in that form years before she become famous. But thank God she surpassed that stage of her life. Every one is beautiful in their unique way. Sabi nga ni Lady Gaga, I was born this way :D

  15. I always think that happy girls are the prettiest! It actually doesn't matter if thin or fat, short or tall. True beauty shows when you love yourself and when you're happy with what you have.

  17. media creates a false sense of beauty for young people to emulate. cliche as it may sound, beauty is not about what can be seen physically but that which radiates from within.

  18. When you are beautiful inside, it shows outside :)

  19. Hi there,
Glad to be back... This is a very powerful topic and one that many continue to debate. It's a pity that even with reports on the dangers of forcing ourselves to be thin, it remains a popular choice for magazines, designers and young people who want to copy the look. Sadly, until our magazine editors, fashion designers, and society at large change attitudes around the subject, not much will improve. Thanks for sharing that rather disturbing video.

  20. Some people are turning into abrupt ways to make themselves "look good". I guess the media, along with advance technology, is slowly changing the definition of real beauty. People want to look like the celebrities they see on tv because they believe that it is the norm of being beautiful. But those celebrities, it is their job to look like that, and we dont have to be too hard on ourselves in trying to look just like them.

  22. Sadly, we are living in a society where beauty equated with skinny body and fair skin. That's why a lot are obsessed with skin whitening and diet things. I was easily affected by that too. But I came to realize that beauty is not about the physical appearance but rather being happy, healthy and contented with my life. Beauty radiates from within.

  23. Beauty is indeed more than just the looks. But it is not an excuse to neglect your health which reminds me that I need to lose weight not only to look beautiful but to feel healthy.
